Most 3D printing prices come down to the same few things. Once you know them, you can estimate your own job before you ask anyone for a quote. Here's how it works at our Logan studio, with real numbers.
The four things that set the price
- Material used. Charged by the gram. Bigger, denser prints use more.
- Material type. Basic PLA is the cheapest. Silk, translucent, glow and PETG cost a little more, and ABS a little more again.
- Setup. Every job needs the file checked, sliced and the machine prepared. We charge a flat setup fee rather than hiding it in a higher gram rate.
- Extras. A second colour, supports that need cleaning, or design work if you don't have a file.

Worked examples
- A small desk organiser, 60 g of PLA: $8 setup + 60 g × 15c = $17.
- A silk-PLA vase, 150 g: $8 setup + 150 g × 18c = $35.
- A two-colour name sign, 90 g of PLA: $8 + 90 g × 15c + $5 second colour = $27.
- A tiny keyring, 8 g: the 15c/g works out to under $2, so the $15 minimum order applies. This is why batches of small items are much better value than one.
Why bigger isn't always dearer, and small isn't always cheap
A hollow, thin-walled vase can weigh less than a small solid block. Weight, not height, drives the price. And because setup is a flat fee, ordering several parts together costs far less per part than ordering them one at a time.
Bulk discounts
Discounts apply automatically: 10% off at 10+ items, 15% off at 25+, and 20% off at 50+. They suit club merch, event favours and small product runs.
