Designing a custom 3D-printed name sign: fonts, colours and sizes that work

How to design a 3D-printed name sign that looks great and prints well: choosing fonts, contrast colours, sizes, thickness and mounting for bedrooms, desks and shopfronts.

A 3D-printed name sign is one of the most popular things we make, for kids' bedrooms, gamers' desks, pet beds and small businesses. A few design choices make the difference between a sign that looks professional and one that's hard to read.

1. Pick a bold, simple font

Thick, rounded or block fonts print best and read from across a room. Very thin or ornate script can lose its detail, because there's a limit to how fine a line plastic can be. If you love a script font, we'll thicken it so every letter holds together.

2. Use strong colour contrast

Raised letters in one colour over a base in another is what makes a sign pop. Light on dark (white on black) or dark on light is always legible. Two similar mid-tones, such as red on orange, can disappear in photos and from a distance.

  • Kids' rooms: bright letters on a black or navy base.
  • Desks and gaming setups: teal, purple or glow-in-the-dark letters on black.
  • Business signs: match your brand colours as closely as possible.

3. Choose the right size

As a rule of thumb, letters about 3 cm tall are readable from 3 metres. For a bedroom door, 20–30 cm wide is plenty. For a shopfront or a hallway wall, go bigger. Bigger signs can be printed in sections and joined, so ask if you need something large.

4. Think about mounting

  • Wall hanging: keyhole slots or hidden loops, so there's no visible hardware.
  • Desk or shelf: a flat base or a small stand.
  • Door or fence: screw holes, or strong double-sided tape for smooth indoor surfaces.

5. Indoors or outdoors?

PLA is perfect indoors but can soften in a hot car or direct Queensland sun. For anything outdoors, we print in PETG, which handles heat and weather far better.

Special finishes

Silk filament gives a metallic shine, translucent filament glows when lit from behind, and glow-in-the-dark filament charges in daylight and shines at night. See our colours page, and remember that other colours are available on request.
