How to set up a home maker workspace on any budget

How to set up a 3D printing, laser or craft workspace at home: the right spot, benches, storage, lighting, power, ventilation and safety.

You don't need a huge shed to be a maker. A corner of a garage or spare room can work brilliantly if it's set up well. Here's how we'd do it.

Pick the right spot

  • Somewhere with stable temperature, out of direct sun and draughts.
  • Good ventilation, especially for ABS printing or lasers.
  • Away from bedrooms if machines will run overnight, because printers hum.

A solid surface

Printers shake as they move, and a wobbly desk shows up in your prints. A heavy bench or a concrete paver under the printer makes a real difference.

Storage

Light and power

Safety first

Fit a smoke alarm, keep an extinguisher nearby and plan your ventilation before you buy a laser. Read our home workshop safety guide.
