Glow-in-the-dark 3D prints: how they work and how to make them glow brighter

How glow-in-the-dark filament works, how long it glows, how to charge it for the brightest glow, and the best things to make with it.

Glow-in-the-dark prints are one of our most popular gifts, especially for kids' rooms, gamers and signs. Here's what's actually going on, and how to get the best glow.

How it works

Glow filament contains phosphorescent particles (usually strontium aluminate). They soak up energy from light, then slowly release it as a visible glow when it gets dark. It isn't radioactive and doesn't need batteries.

How long does it glow?

Expect a bright glow for the first 10 to 30 minutes, then a softer glow that fades over a few hours. Green glows the brightest and longest; blue is a little dimmer but looks striking.

Charge it for the brightest glow

  • Sunlight charges it fastest. A few minutes on a windowsill is plenty.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) light gives an instant, very bright charge.
  • Warm household LEDs work, but more slowly.

Ideas that look amazing

  • Name signs and door plaques for kids' rooms
  • Stars, moons and planets for the ceiling
  • Light-switch surrounds and keyrings you can find in the dark
  • Logos and signs for gaming setups, like our ARES sign
