An engraved timber board can last a lifetime with a little care. Timber is a natural material: it dries out, it absorbs water, and it loves a regular oil. Here's our simple routine.
Everyday cleaning
- Wash by hand in warm, soapy water and rinse quickly.
- Never put timber in the dishwasher or leave it soaking. It will crack and warp.
- Dry it straight away with a tea towel, then stand it on its edge to air-dry completely.
Oil it once a month
Oiling keeps the timber from drying out and makes the engraving stand out with a rich, dark contrast. Use a food-safe oil on anything that touches food.
- Make sure the board is clean and completely dry.
- Pour a little oil on and rub it in with a cloth, including the edges and the back.
- Leave it to soak in for a few hours or overnight.
- Wipe off any excess and buff it with a dry cloth.
Display pieces and coasters
Signs and coasters that never touch food only need a wipe with a damp cloth, plus a coat of wax every few months. Keep them out of strong direct sun, which slowly fades timber.
