Post-processing 3D prints: removing supports, sanding and finishing

How to clean up 3D prints: removing supports, trimming and deburring, sanding, filling layer lines and finishing safely, with the tools that make the biggest difference.

A raw 3D print is rarely the finished article. A few minutes of cleaning makes the difference between something that looks like a prototype and something you'd proudly give as a gift. Here's the process we use in our studio.

1. Remove supports carefully

Let the print cool first so it's not soft. Snap or cut supports away in small pieces rather than pulling long strips, which can leave marks or tear the surface. Work from the outside in, and use flush cutters for the awkward spots.

2. Trim and deburr

Clean up the first-layer edge (often called elephant's foot) and any stringing. A light pass with a deburring tool or a hobby knife blade, held almost flat, tidies edges quickly.

3. Sand in stages

Start at around 220 grit to remove layer lines on surfaces that will be painted or displayed, then move to 400 and 800. Wet sanding keeps dust down and stops the plastic from melting from friction. Sand the whole piece evenly so it doesn't look patchy.

4. Fill and prime for painting

For a perfectly smooth painted finish, apply a thin spray filler primer, sand lightly, and repeat until layer lines disappear. Then paint with acrylics or spray paint in thin coats.

5. Safety

  • Wear a P2 dust mask when sanding and eye protection when cutting.
  • Use spray paints and primers outdoors or in a well-ventilated space.
  • Chemical smoothing of ABS with solvents needs proper ventilation and protective gear. Follow the product's safety guidance, or leave it to the professionals.

Prefer a finished piece?

Many of our prints are printed in a colour and finish that needs little or no post-processing: silk and matte filaments hide layer lines well. See our 3D printing page, or ask about a painted or sanded finish when you request a quote.
